Our aim is to make a significant contribution to theory and practice of how lasting knowledge is acquired by linking two strands of research: meaningful (generative) learning and desirable difficulties in learning. In eight research projects, we focus on the effects of retrieval practice, spacing, and interleaving, combined with instructional interventions that support meaningful (generative) learning, on processes and outcomes of long-term learning.
